# What does “peptide specialist” mean?

Break the phrase apart. It gives you a subject to ask about, not an answer about a treatment.

## Peptide describes a substance

Peptide

A peptide joins amino acids into a short chain; amino acids are the parts that proteins are built from.

Ask for the exact medicine name. “Peptide care” is too broad to use as the name of your treatment.

### What is missing from the phrase?

US drug law did not have a separate set of rules called “peptide therapy,” as checked September 26, 2026. The legal question is about the exact product: an approved drug, a medicine lawfully made to order, or an unapproved drug.

## Check approval for the named product and its intended use

FDA is the national agency for medicine reviews. Read “FDA” as “Food and Drug Administration.”

FDA approval

FDA approval means a particular product has been reviewed for a stated use, rather than every use anyone might propose.

Evidence note

### Examples of reviewed products

The September 26, 2026 US check found FDA-approved products for semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) and for tirzepatide (Zepbound and Mounjaro). These are medicine names: Ozempic and Mounjaro treat type 2 diabetes; Wegovy and Zepbound help with weight management. Those are examples of their approved uses.

FDA label: semaglutide (Wegovy)

FDA label: tirzepatide (Mounjaro)

Write down the medicine name along with its form—perhaps a tablet, an injection, or something else. Have the person caring for you name the health problem the medicine would treat.

## Keep the people and the product separate

Prescription

Someone licensed to prescribe writes the medicine order known as a prescription.

Compounded medicine

A licensed pharmacist, doctor, or place registered with FDA to make medicines to order can prepare this medicine.

Pharmacy board

A state pharmacy board keeps the license records for pharmacies.

Check both names: the professional assessing you and the pharmacy supplying your medicine. A name for the service does not answer either question.

### Who will be making the decision?

Ask the person caring for you for their full name, license type, and license number. Keep their answers beside the proposed medicine name.
